Being well bred here is all about the dessert. And the coffee. And the food. It has absolutely nothing to do with debutantes and horses. The Well-Bred Bakery is located in the Historic Biltmore Village. Actually, there are two Well-Bred locations but I’ve only been to one. Although the Historic Biltmore Village shops seem to have transformed from mostly locally owned boutiques to more commercial stores like Williams-Sonoma and Talbots, the village located outside of the Biltmore gate in Asheville is quaint. There are, however, a few remaining shops that are not of the big-chain variety. One of those locally owned shops is a great café and bakery, the Well Bred Bakery & Café.
I spent a couple hours walking around Biltmore Village window shopping. I drooled over the luxury linens at Porter and Prince. I took in the fantastic local art at the Southern Highland Craft Gallery, which is located in the coolest architectural structure (an old bank, I think). I ooo’d and ah’d over pens and stationary at Origami Ink. Probably the most fun was at Estate Jewelry Limited, where I tried on glittery estate diamond bracelets and brilliant rings, any of which would have accentuated my outfit, but would have left me destitute. All of this shopping works up an appetite, you know? Fortunately, sandwiched between the diamonds and the stationary is the Well-Bred Bakery & Café.
This particular autumn day was sunny and warm. People filled the outdoor seating area, soaking up the sun and fare. Upon entering the bakery-café my nose was greeted with the smell of the most appetizing and appealing baked goods and savories. There were so many choices it was overwhelming. What to choose? I wasn’t starving, but I was a bit hungry and although I should have opted for something more lunch appropriate and healthy, life if short: I opted for dessert. And not just any dessert, but a moist, decadent chocolate cake with a healthy smear of fudgy icing. Since it was warm, I was warm, and although the coffee smelled wonderful, I chose a cold soda over a coffee. It was perfect to wash down the fudgery I was about to scarf down.
And scarf it down I did! This chocolate cake was so rich and so scrumptious it was almost too much to finish. Almost. I was able to do maximum damage to my waistline and finish inhaling the crisp, bubbly soda and the cake with every ounce of strength I had. I promptly rolled out the door after eating up the sweets and staggered off to my next adventure. I’m pretty sure it was the sugar overload that sustained me while I explored the architecture and shops found up the road in Asheville. Thank goodness I found the Well-Bred Bakery. A girl can never have enough bakery sweets!
If you are visiting Asheville or the historic Biltmore Village, be sure to stop by the Well-Bred Bakery & Café – you’ll find the perfect pick-me-up to sustain you. The bakery-café is located at 6 Boston Way, Asheville, NC, 28803.
