Fellini’s, located on the mall, was a short distance from my hotel in Charlottesville, VA. They have a great rating on TripAdvisor and you can never go wrong with Italian, so why not try them for dinner? It just so happened that on the night in question, Charlottesville had a crazy torrential rain with flash floods. Springing from the parking deck my friend and I ran from overhang to overhang and blew into the restaurant like a hurricane, completely drenched. This didn’t even phase the hostess.
The restaurant is quite beautiful inside with exposed brick and some industrial elements, as well as a tasteful decor. Entering from the street you arrive in the bar area, which is spacious with a good amount of seating. The dining area is located to the right and there are two stories for dining.
It was not crazy for a Thursday night, but I suspect that was due to the awful weather because on Friday night the windows were open and a mixture of jazz and chatter filled the air when I stopped to get a photo. That night [Thursday] the Michael Elswick Gathering jazz trio played catchy tunes that had me swaying in my seat; they were really personable and had a great sound. Music is a common affair at Fellini’s and you can view their live music calendar here.
Although I looked like I participated in a wet T-shirt contest (why did I wear white!?) or someone attempted to drown me in a nearby creek, the server greeted us immediately. A few minutes later we were seated and a cup of hot tea was ordered. Now I know this is an odd note, but the restroom is very clean and open. This was especially ideal for me because I used this space to blot my soaked shirt and to wring out the bottoms of my pants. (Yes, I was that soaked!)
On to the food! We opted for the appetizer of the day which was five crostini (one each) with pesto, olive tapenade, a roasted red pepper cheese, bruschetta, and a roasted garlic. Holy cow, was this stuff phenomenal! It was so good, in fact, that I jumped right into eating and forgot to take a photo! We shared all 5 crostini so we could try each one and they were so delish! My friend ordered the Meat Lasagna which was layered with lamb sausage, ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, and Bolognese between the pasta. I ordered the Spicy Sausage Linguini made with Italian sausage, tomato sauce, fennel, basil herbed ricotta, and linguine.
I don’t know about you, but when I eat in an Italian restaurant I have to try the tiramisu, no matter how full I am. Tiramisu is one of my all-time favorite desserts. I’ve made this dessert once, translated from an Italian cookbook by an Italian friend and it was not as good as I expected. This is more than likely due to my kitchen skills and not the recipe. Since that one time, I’ve misplaced the recipe so I’m out of luck there anyway. Soooo, since I’m not good at making this delectable treat it’s imperative that I sample whenever possible. Theirs was crazy good! The entire meal was delizioso! Italian is my favorite food and this was not disappointing. If you’re in Charlottesville, Fellini’s is a great place to eat!
