Blue Surf Café

One of my favorite places in Wilmington! Blue Surf Café with its decidedly beachy décor offers a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy your food. The menu changes seasonally depending on what is available locally. I first heard about the Blue Surf from a waiter at the Melting Pot. Zachary was the best waiter at the Melting Pot and he also worked at the Blue Surf Café. By his recommendation, I gave it a shot.

The café is located at the end of a shopping center on Racine Drive near UNC Wilmington. There is outdoor seating, which also has a beachy feel and although you’re in a shopping center, you feel somehow transported closer to the ocean. Inside, there are white benches and glossy wood tables with touches of ocean blue and apricot. The menu is written in colorful chalk on a blackboard above the counter, listing all the deliciousness found within. The atmosphere is low key and relaxing. Not only do these entrepreneurs source their food locally, they also have an art wall featuring local artists, and they host local bands some evenings.

My first visit was amazing. I loved the relaxed feel of the café. They serve Sun Drop. You can never go wrong with a Sun Drop! But what really, really knocked my socks off was the food! They offer quite a few starters and snacks. I wish I could tell you I’ve sampled them all, but alas, I cannot. I am a straight up Surf Chip girl! My favorite is the Surf Chips with parmesan cheese, cilantro, and lime with a little bit of salt and pepper. Or maybe it’s the Surf Chips with homemade pimento cheese, bacon, and basil? Actually I can’t pick a favorite because they are both so darn good! Solution? Order both! (Which is exactly what I do every time I go.)

Next up? The Southern Burger! A juicy burger served on a grilled brioche bun with grilled onions, more of that not-too-spicy pimento, bacon (who doesn’t love bacon?!?), and a spring mix with marinated chick peas as a side. Holy Cow! The food is incredible! Worth every bite and the satisfyingly full belly that comes with it!

Meatloaf Sandwich

Meatloaf Sandwich

On another visit with my son I tried the Meatloaf sandwich. Meatloaf is one of those things that you like a certain way, for me it’s my mom’s meatloaf, and it can be scary to try someone’s other than your mom’s. Well this meatloaf does not disappoint! I’ve never eaten meatloaf on a sandwich before and I’ve asked myself a million times why not?!? It is a brilliant idea! This particular meatloaf is sweet and savory at the same time. Served up hot on a brioche roll topped with siracha mayo, bacon (again with the bacon!), cheddar, onion, and a spicy arugula it is a moist, heavenly treat! The flavors all combine in a sweet, savory, spicy fusion on that roll and have a little party in your mouth. I loved this meatloaf so much that I’ve attempted to recreate it at home because I can’t drive two hours to Wilmington every time I have a craving!

Juston, my son, is a big seafood/fish eating kind of guy so he went a little fancier with his meal and had the Mahi, which was serve on a grit cake with bacon (everything is better with bacon!), sautéed spinach, and a tomato marmalade. Wow. I don’t even like fish and this one was good. So much so I would even order it myself if they didn’t have the best meatloaf sandwich in the world! Unless they take that one off the menu though, I’m sticking with it. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll step out of that zone and try something else. Who knows? But for now I’m pretty content with eating my favorite sandwich!

Personally, I think it’s really important to eat locally when you travel. I recommend this place to everyone I know going to Wilmington. Why? Because the food is excellent! And why wouldn’t you want to support a local business owner and sample what they do best over a chain restaurant any day?!? Supporting local businesses just makes sense. You can eat at a chain eatery of your choice almost anywhere and you already know what that food tastes like. Why not step away from the everyday and try something different, something original, something you can’t eat (or do for that matter) anywhere else?!?

As they like to say: Surf. Eat. Repeat.

Surf. Eat. Repeat.

Surf. Eat. Repeat.
