Have you ever been hungry? I don’t mean the twinges of hunger you feel just before lunch, I mean truly hungry. Many of us are able to open up the cabinet or fridge and sate those hunger pangs with the food in our own home. We’re fortunate. Many others do not have access to the nutrition they need to survive. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, nearly one out of nine people worldwide, or approximately 792.5 million people, are undernourished. While that figure has declined from earlier figures, the number is staggering.

Imagine being a hungry child in school. How can you possibly learn if you’re hungry? Any task is nearly impossible when you’re starving. According to Stop Hunger Now, nearly 50% of people living in extreme poverty are under the age of 18. Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five – nearly 3.1 million children around the world each year. Annually, more people die from hunger than from AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

    • Hi Liz!

Thank you! 🙂 I didn’t realize it either, but I think they do great things and I love that they have low overhead so more money goes to programs.
