The holiday season is upon us, yes you heard that right. How did this happen? I have absolutely no clue. But whether I’m ready or not, it’s coming. Have you thought about your list? If you have, don’t forget to #ShopSmall on Small Business Saturday, 26 November 2016. This is something I’m passionate about, but I’d like to take it a step further. I think we should all shop local and shop small all the time, not just the day after Black Friday. Supporting local and small businesses is better for our community and our economy.
If you live in NC, Southern Pines (aka SoPi) has everything you can imagine and more for your gift giving, not just for the holidays, but for the entire year! Here’s some of the shops you can find along the train tracks in downtown SoPi:
Located in what was once a casino/bowling alley/brothel in the 1920s, Casino Guitars is the place to find that acoustic or electric guitar you’ve desired. Whether you’re looking for a new guitar or an upgrade, Casino Guitars has something for aspiring musicians and seasoned professionals alike. They offer lessons, guitar repair, and if you’re looking to record your own music, a studio.
The Country Bookshop
The Country Bookshop has something for the bibliophile or two on your list. Plus they’ve got a selection of unusual gifts that would make great stocking stuffers. Visit the local section of the bookstore and check out the varied selection of regional and local books with ties to our state and towns surrounding SoPi.
Accessories, holiday decor, jewelry, lighting – the Framer’s Cottage has these and more to help you make your list and check it twice for all those nice people for which you need to buy.
One step into this store and I was transported to Bucks County, PA. Gracefully Rustic has a large selection of primitive décor and gifts. Looking for a hostess gift or a small token for a coworker? Take a look at the mouse ornaments or the holiday scented candles for gifts that will put a smile on someone’s face.
Repurpose. It’s the new green way. Stop by Green Goods and see what is made new again in unique and functional ways. An inspiring place to shop for the eco-conscious people in your life, as well as everyone else on your list.
The sleek home items found in this store are made from recycled or repurposed items that will make any home décor chic. The pièce de résistance? Custom made dining room tables by Hogwild Farm Tables are made locally from reclaimed wood by the shop owner and her husband.
Living on the Bliss
The boho-chic hippie glamour girl you’re shopping for will blissfully adore the clothing and accessories found at Living on the Bliss.
Marie & Marcele Boutique
This boutique marries vintage fashion and modern lines, offering a little something for every stylish woman. A gift from Marie & Marcele Boutique under the tree is sure to delight that special fashionista on your list.
Mockingbird on Broad
Everything you need to “feather your nest” can be found at Mockingbird on Broad. They’ve got a great selection from infant to adult and for your home too.
Seagrove Candle Company
Candles! Soap! Pottery! All made in North Carolina and all found a the Seagrove Candle Company. Their candles and soap smell so heavenly, you’ll think Calgon took you away. This is one of my favorite places to get gifts for people that they’ll adore. I mean, who doesn’t love candles, soap and pottery?
What’s the Southern Whey? Cheese of course! And don’t forget the charcuterie and local foods for your holiday celebrations. Maybe try Vivian Howard’s Blueberry BBQ Sauce…
Southern Pines Welcome Center
The SoPi Welcome Center should be your first stop in town. While there, take a look at the photographs, flags, and historical items on display. Before you leave pick up a train whistle or puzzle for a kid you know or a birdhouse made by a local artist using old silver plate dishes.
Whew! Now that your #ShopSmall shopping is done, take a break. Grab a cup of java and a snack at the Swank Coffee Shop. All that’s left now is to head home, grab a glass of wine and wrap all those gifts.
