I sat there staring at the steaming bowl of cheese sitting in front of me. To be fair, this lasagne did have a few noodles and a tiny bit of meat sauce so that it could technically be called “lasagne.” It is a gesture to the Italian classic, but it’s nothing like what you’ve ever had before, unless of course you ate the original at the Ram’s Head Rathskeller. The S & T’s version is an homage to the original lasagne from ages ago at The Rat in Chapel Hill. While the Rathskeller is no longer in business, the S & T’s Soda Shoppe in Pittsboro has taken the baton and is keeping a couple of their old favorites alive. For those that remember the original it’s a bit of nostalgia and for those that have heard about the original it’s a way to taste what others rave about.
The other Rathskeller original was the Gambler, a grilled skirt steak with peppers and onions. Steve, the owner of S & T’s, has his version served with toast and steak fries. The seasoned skirt steak is whisked to the table on a sizzling skillet, waiting for you to take a bite.
This wasn’t my first visit to the S & T’s Soda Shoppe. While I did go to the S & T to try Steve’s Gambler and the lasagne, I could not pass up the chance to have a chocolate malt, it is an old fashioned soda shoppe after all!
