I discovered Paolo’s Gelato quite by accident. You see, Paolo was one of the vendors at the Food Film Fest in Charleston this past November. There he was, in all his gelato glory, dishing out mini cones of Benne Wafer and Rice Pudding gelatos from his nifty ice cream cart.
After waiting patiently to sample the gelato, I couldn’t wait for that first bite! The Benne Wafer gelato was so creamy, so sweet, so Benne. It was love at first lick. Admittedly, I went back for seconds. That little, teeny, tiny cone only whet the appetite, you know? I tried the rice pudding gelato. It was okay, but the Benne owned the night.
The next day, walking around Charleston, the thought of a Benne Wafer gelato preyed on my mind. With little trouble, I found the shop. Gripping the gelato cone door handle I burst into the store looking for Benne. Alas, there was no Benne to be found! I was disappointed. Nowhere in my mind did I consider that Benne Wafer gelato was a special gelato, and not a regularly featured flavor. Although my quest for Benne fell short, I was easily tempted into trying the grapefruit gelato, a sweet yet tart treat.
Paolo’s Gelato Italiano offers many flavors of gelato, and they offer samples so you can find the perfect indulgence! If you are visiting Charleston, especially in the heat of summer, you need to meander over to 41 John Street and stop in for a treat!
