Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn in Wilmington is self described as hot, fast, cheap, and easy but don’t let that scare you. The restaurant is located in a building that actually looks like a barn you’d find on a farm, on the outside that is. On the inside the unique decor isn’t barn-like at all. It reminds me somewhat of a tattoo parlor – a crazy, stickered, Dia de los Muertos meets a Texas Chuy’s – tattoo parlor. The restaurant has a funky, laid-back atmosphere. It’s unpretentious and easy to go and enjoy yourself and the food.

Let’s face it, I’m not going to Flaming Amy’s for the decor. I’m going for the burrito BBQ Chicken nachos! I’ve never even tried the burritos. Every time I look at the menu there are so many choices for burritos, but when I get up to the counter to order I just can’t order a burrito, I have to order nachos. And not just any nachos, but the BBQ Chicken Nachos. The regular cheese nachos and the Nachos Carnivore are each crunchy, melty nacho goodness. But my absolute favorite is the BBQ Chicken Nachos.

These bbq chicken nachos come to you on a brightly colored melamine platter with a layer of corn tortillas smothered in melted cheddar and jack cheeses, chopped grilled chicken, red onions, tomatoes, bacon (!!!), and a sweet and spicy chipotle bbq sauce. It is divine! The also have serve SunDrop (and if you know anything about me you know this is my kryptonite!!!) and have an off the chain salsa bar.

The salsa bar kicks booty. Of course there is the traditional salsa, and a tomato/bean salsa, a good choice, no doubt. But the salsas I love the most are the pineapple jalapeño salsa and the best, best, best is the peach-mango salsa! First, I dig into the mound of chicken, bacon, cheesy goodness drizzled with that sweet and spicy chipotle bbq sauce. Every now and then I like to add a little peach-mango salsa to a nacho bite. But what I really want to put that sweet, peachy salsa on is the blank chips (you know the ones on the bottom with nothing on them) at the bottom of the platter. The toasty, warm chips are begging for some salsa love, and that love is easy to find on the salsa bar!

By the time I look down at my empty plate (yes, your plate will be empty too) I am so full and yet so sad at the same time. Game over. Finished. The end. There are no more nachos on my plate. I take one last drink of my cold, refreshing SunDrop and waddle off towards the car. It’s a good thing Flaming Amy’s is a two hour drive from my house. I’d eat here every week if I could!
